As seen from the statistics, the environment is indeed suffering. The first graph (Figure 1) shows the clear and distinct increase in carbon dioxide levels. This has a direct implication to how the earth is suffering. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is produced most by us humans. In the burning of fossil fuels and other processes which humans deem necessary. The increase in this carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere leads to global warming, as seen in the second graph (Figure 2).
Imagine humans, like us, being “baked” in the oven. I believe no one will find it desirable to be treated this way. However, that is what the Earth is experiencing now. The effects of global warming are accelerating. So, it is no doubt that the environment is really suffering. Global warming leads to many adverse effects and problems and that is why many scientists and ordinary people like us are interested in this topic. It concerns our future and what is going to be the place that we will be living in.
Global warming is only one aspect how the environment is suffering. There are many other problems that are happening around the world. For example forest fires that are occurring, the cutting down of trees etc. All these examples are signs that the environment is suffering. People may think that forests should make way for roads and buildings. However, one must not forget that humans originate from the jungles and they should be preserved.
Indeed, the environment is suffering and many people do agree on that. But we must not forget that there are people who are trying to salvage the situation. For example in the Singapore context, the National Environment Agency takes the role to control environmental problems in Singapore, like pollution. This helps to maintain Singapore’s cleanliness and it is also part of salvaging the global situation. As long as every little country does their part, the situation might just improve. The table below shows the amount of waste that is being recycled and this shows the effort Singapore is making towards saving the Earth.
